Telematics Device Portfolio Development
For any IoT powered application, getting the IoT Device right is vital to the success of the application. Given that hardware doesnot allow agile development approach that is possible in the software side of things, one has to make carefully considered design choices while finalizing the IoT Device Deisgn choice.
At SenSight, we see IoT device development as a multi-dimensional rubik cube of choices where sensors, connectivity, computation, power and cost trade-offs abound and you fit together blocks to serve the use case you are considering.
Understand your design choices
As part of our AutoWiz Connected Vehicle platform, we looked at the Connected Vehicle Use Cases and the market needs, we saw a variety in terms of functionality, features and cost continuum. Some of the design options are listed below:
- Use cases: Live Tracking, Driving Behavior, Vehicle Diagnostics and Device works autonoumously
- Sensors : Mix of GPS, G-Sensor, OBD/CAN, Temp/Humidity sensors
- Connectivity options within vehicle or to cloud : Bluetooth, Wifi, Cellular (2G/3G/4G/CAT-M), LoRa
- Compute strategy : On device, On cloud, Driver Smartphone, Vehicle's Head-Unit
- Power: Vehicle battery powered, independent battery powered and voltage range supported
Distill options into specific device choices
From potentially large number of combinations, we carefully selected key combinations that make sense from the point of view of market feedback, cost, usability, manufacturability and standardization. Some of the selected options that emerge include:
Integrated OBD GPS Gsensor Device with Cellular connectivity and optional wifi : Powered by Vehicle OBD port, all in one device that works independently of Driver
OBD Gsensor Device with Bluetooth connectivity : Powered by Vehicle OBD port, works in conjunction with Driver's Smartphone
BLE Beacon with Gsensor : Low cost and low power, powered by replaceable coin cell battery, works in conjunction with Driver's Smartphone
Pair Device with computation Strategy
From computation standpoint, choices are based on computation ability of the device, data transfer cost as well as nature of computation. Typically, fast moving and streaming data processing is performed as close to sensors while deeper, time series analytics and machine learning tasks are performed on cloud. However, with increased ability of smartphones, these appear as vital data capturing and processing nodes specially in the consumer IoT world and we are taking full advantage of those.
